Youth band
Do you know a youngster of school age who is interested in playing an instrument? Are you interested in learning a brass instrument yourself? If so then our youth band is the group for you!
We are a lively group of youngsters ranging in age from 5 to 18. The band welcomes all new players and is able to provide an instrument, music, uniform and support for those in their early years of playing. We rehearse from 6:45-7:45pm in term time and our subscriptions are just £5 a month which includes instrument hire. Most of our current band have been taught by us from scratch.
The aim of the band is to encourage youngsters to improve their playing through a shared enjoyment of working with others. We have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, members of the band suggest music to play, sometimes conduct a piece and recently initiated the purchase of a more modern uniform. We are a very sociable band and enjoy chatting and sharing refreshments at all of our summer engagements as well as playing music together.
As they progress in their playing our youngsters have the opportunity to join with senior band rehearsals and take part in competitions and a varied range of performances. Our former members have gone on to play in their University brass bands, become music teachers and play in military bands. Our former flugelhorn player Marcus Bunton reached the final of Channel 4’s The Piano in 2025.
Sandra, our musical director, is a qualified teacher with many years of classroom experience. All of our volunteers have had appropriate checks and we are a member of Brass Bands England. As such, we follow their child protection guidelines. Our band welfare officer attends our weekly rehearsals. Our policies are available by following this link.
